Safety

Transport to-and-from school
If your child is walking to-and-from school, it is advisable to walk with him or her several times, pointing out dangers and safest places to cross the road.

Talk about basic road rules and the dangers of accepting rides. If you intend to pick up your child every day or occasionally make sure he/she understands what to do if you are late. Bike riding to school under 8 years unsupervised is NOT permitted.

Please warn your child/children about:
  • Loitering to and from school
  • Visiting friends without your permission
  • Children are not to go anywhere without  the permission of parents.
Notification
Please notify the school if your child:
  • Is being picked up by someone else
  • Is to leave the school grounds
  • has a change of address
  • will be absent from or late for school
  • has a notifiable infectious disease
Bus list
Each day we keep an updated list of children travelling by bus in the office. Please notify us if your children are not travelling on the bus on any given day prior to the 3o'clock bell.

First aid treatment – sickness
Should a child suffer an accident at School, they will be attended to, and if it is felt that a Doctor’s advice is necessary then the parent will be contacted immediately.

If children become ill at school, the parents will be notified to come and take them home. All staff have current first aid certificates.

Infectious diseases
Please inform the office if your child has an infectious disease. There is a list of the most common diseases in the First Aid Room.

Traveling by bus
Be with your children until the bus picks them up in the morning and be prepared to meet them when they arrive home each day. Please be on the side of the road that they alight to.

Teach your child bus safety rules. A staff member will check the children each day as they board the bus.

On wet days children assemble under cover in front of the library.

Early closure
Occasionally the school may have to close due to unforeseen circumstances. If children need to go home early you will be contacted by phone. Cancellations can be heard on the Mt Hutt College line 3028904.

Taking children early
It is sometimes necessary for parents to take children from school during school hours. Please advise the class teacher and school office when the child is leaving as this will save much confusion and worry as to the child’s whereabouts.

Class trips, visits, and school camps
As part of the class programme day visits or in some cases overnight camps are undertaken by classes. These are a valuable extension of the class programme and involve a large amount of work and organisation.

Our Lady of the Snows has a policy which states the adult to child ratio for a variety of activities. Parent support is essential in these circumstances and encouraged.

On occasions there may need to be a ballot to decide which parents can travel/assist the school.
Regular medication
If for some reason your child requires regular medication, please contact the school. You will be required to complete a Request to Administer Medication form.

Provide the medication in a labelled container with the necessary instructions for use. This will be kept in a locked cupboard in the medical room.
